As a quick time event ( QTE ) are cutscenes in video and computer games called in which quickly press the player with his character a series or combination of keys must (also several times) to win or survive. These situations, also known as events, are mainly used in jump 'n' runs and in action adventures .

Examples

Quick Time Events were widely used in Resident Evil 4 , for example , which broke this part with the rest of the survival horror series. So the main character, Leon S. Kennedy, often had to save himself from rolling boulders, attacking monsters and trapped traps in order to survive. The video game series Tomb Raider has also been using a lot of QTEs in the cutscenes since the sequel Tomb Raider: Legend .

Other video games in which QTEs often appear include: Heavy Rain , Fahrenheit , Shenmue , The Walking Dead , God of War , Prince of Persia , Dante's Inferno , Soul Calibur , Turok , parts of the Assassin's Creed series, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames , Star Wars: The Force Unleashed , The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings , Quantum of Solace and Until Dawn .

Quick time action

In Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive , on the other hand, there is a game element called Quick Time Action . The player can program a certain action in advance, which is only carried out by the characters when a button is pressed later.

Disadvantages of quick time events

Quick time events don't always meet with approval. The player is firmly given what he has to do in which order, his playful freedom is severely restricted. Furthermore, it can happen that the player is distracted from the shown cutscene by focusing on the next button to be pressed and cannot fully perceive it. On the other hand, Quick Time Events enable actions that could hardly be mastered with conventional control methods.

QTEs are preferred in first person FPS shooters and similar games. Users with a physical disability face additional difficulties, regardless of the general limitations, especially when language is the only control option.
