action

On February 2, 2014 the ten friends Sam ( Hayden Panettiere ), Josh ( Rami Malek ), his twin sisters Hannah and Beth ( Ella Lentini ), Mike ( Brett Dalton ), Jessica ( Meaghan Martin ), Emily ( Nichole Bloom ), Matt ( Jordan Fisher ), Ashley ( Galadriel Stineman ) and Chris ( Noah Fleiss ) in the Blackwood Pines mountain hut on Mount Washington for their annual winter outing. Hannah, who feels drawn to Mike, is played a prank by part of the group during the stay, whereupon she runs humiliated into the snowy forest. Beth, who runs after her, finds her in a small clearing and tries to calm her down. Suddenly they hear a horrific noise and run away from an unknown pursuer. When they get to the edge of a cliff, Hannah slips and hangs on the hand of her sister, who is holding on to a branch. A stranger stretches out his hand towards the sisters while the branch breaks and both of them fall. Since the police cannot find any remains, they are declared missing.

For the first anniversary of the disappearance of Hannah and Beth Washington, Josh invites the remaining seven friends back to the Blackwood Pines. Everyone is on their way there. When the group separates, the idyllic excursion begins to be ominous. Mike and Jessica make their way to a guest hut to be alone. Jessica is kidnapped by an unknown creature. Mike tries to save her by looking for her. Depending on his decisions, he finds her either dead or semi-conscious and badly injured. Jessica falls down with the elevator she is lying on. Mike pursues an unknown man ( Larry Fessenden ) who he believes killed Jessica to an abandoned mental hospital. There he found evidence of a mine accident in 1952 in which miners were buried. One of them was detained and tortured by doctors from the mental institution. A reporter tried to find out more about this thing that was being covered up.

It turns out that an Indian people cursed the mountain for the destruction of nature by the miners. The buried miners were turned into aggressive wendigos who are still alive, accidentally freed by the youngsters and hunted down from now on. Depending on the decisions and skills of the player, a different number of young people survive and can be rescued by a mountain rescue helicopter.

Game principle and technology

The player alternately slips into the roles of the protagonists and explores the surroundings from a third-person perspective . Loud noises, music and the representation of light and shadow create a creepy atmosphere. The player is faced with numerous decisions, each of which has an impact on the course of the game. In addition to these decisions, quick-time events come into play, which, depending on whether you master them, also play a key role in the course of the game. If a pawn dies, this is final. From this point on, the player can only continue to play with the remaining pieces. However, it is possible, based on the choices made, to allow all eight characters to survive.

Every action of the character has an effect on the rest of the game, even if it is not obvious. Due to the different decision options, it is necessary to play through it several times in order to be able to experience all possible endings of the story. There should be more than a thousand scene variations. A complete run should take about nine hours of playing time.

Production notes

The story of the game is based on the typical plot of films of the teen slasher genre such as Nightmare or Scream - Schrei! and pays homage to this sub-form of the horror film. According to the story of the American authors Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick , it is an interactive horror film that makes use of all genre clichés.

Originally announced at the Gamescom trade fair in 2012 for the PlayStation 3 , Until Dawn should support the PlayStation Move motion control . The use of this special control option was discarded in the course of further development and replaced by handling using the DualShock controller.

In addition, a version for the PlayStation 3 was dispensed with and the game was only released for the PlayStation 4 . This was justified with the better technical possibilities of the new console. To bring the game closer to the medium of film, well-known actors such as Hayden Panettiere in the role of Sam, Ella Lentini as Hannah and Beth, Rami Malek as Joshua, Meaghan Jette Martin as Jessica, Brett Dalton as Michael were used for the motion capture , Nichole Bloom as Emily, Jordan Fisher as Matthew, Galadriel Stineman as Ashley, Noah Fleiss as Chris and Peter Stormare as Dr. AJ Hill committed.
