from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Francesco Penni (* around 1488 in Florence , † around 1530 in Naples ) was an Italian painter. Raphael's student worked on its punching . He was also known as Il Fattore .

Life and works

Giovanni Francesco Penni came from Florence. He was a brother of Bartolommeo and Luca Penni .

He received his training from Raphael and was his - or Giulio Romanos  - collaborator on the Vatican frescoes and in the Villa Farnesina . In 1528 he worked in the Palazzo del Te in Mantua , and is said to have moved to Naples later . He is said to have been forty years old. According to Thieme / Becker , the year of death, which Vasari and others give as 1528, should be increased by one to two years.

Giovanni Francesco Penni: Portrait of a Young Man (detail), Dublin, National Gallery of Ireland

Not all of Pennis’s works can be identified with certainty, since he worked as a “fattore” of Raffael’s designs and worked with Giulio Romano after Raphael’s death. Sabine Poeschel wrote in a review of the catalog for the exhibition Raffael and the Consequences , which took place in Stuttgart in 2001 , that he is “intangible” as an artist personality , and in the Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists he is called a “shadowy figure”. He signed the portrait of a young man that is in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin . This painting was previously interpreted as a self-portrait; in the meantime, however, this theory has been refuted after Giulio Romano's discovery of a drawing by Pennis.

Penni worked on the Stanza dell 'Eliodoro, among other things, as well as on the Stanza dell' Incendio with the oath of cleansing Leo III. and the coronation of Charlemagne . He also left works in the loggias and the farnesina. The Vatican houses the Madonna di Monteluce , which he created together with Giulio Romano in Santa Maria di Monteluce in Perugia in 1524 . In the Prado in Madrid , the works are Visitazione and Calvario to see. Carpet boxes from Hand Pennis are located in London . The facade painting on Monte Giordano and a fresco of St. Christopher in Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome and a tabernacle with Madonna in Montughi have not been preserved . Pennis' replica of Raphael's Transfigurazione from the Church of Santo Spirito degli Incurabili in Naples is no longer on site; the picture ended up in Spain and, after numerous changes of ownership, in the Prado.

A portrait of Giovanni Francesco Penni is in Cod. Icon. 366, fol. 22r can be found in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek . This drawing probably served as a template for Pennis Vitenportrait in the Teutsche Academie and may also be related to the portrait of Pennis in Vasaris Vite .
