NGC 978 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Triangulum at the northern sky . It is an estimated 216 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 80,000 ly. Together with PGC 9823 , it forms a bound pair of galaxies.
The galaxies NGC 969 , NGC 970 , NGC 973 and NGC 974 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 22nd, 1827 .
