NGC 993 = NGC 994 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 310 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 65,000 ly
. a. the galaxies NGC 1004 , NGC 1007 , NGC 1008 , IC 241 .

The object was on 15 January 1865 by the astronomer Albert Marth using a 48-inch - telescope discovered. On October 17, 1885, it was discovered independently by Lewis A. Swift , which later led to the catalog entry NGC 994 .
