NGC 985 is a ring galaxy with an active galaxy core in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 577 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 165,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 960 and NGC 988 , among others .
The object was by astronomer Francis Leavenworth use in 1886 of a 26-inch - telescope discovered.
