NGC 1000 is a compact galaxy of Hubble type C in the constellation Andromeda on the northern sky . It is estimated to be 202 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly. 
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 995 , NGC 996 , NGC 999 , NGC 1005 , among others .
The object was discovered on December 9, 1871 by Édouard Stephan .
