NGC 1022 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 65 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 961 , NGC 991 , NGC 1051 , IC 243 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on September 10, 1785 .
