NGC 1022 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 65 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 961 , NGC 991 , NGC 1051 , IC 243 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on September 10, 1785 .
