NGC 1038 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 270 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light-years across. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with IC 1827 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1016 , NGC 1019 , NGC 1032 , NGC 1043 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 17, 1885 .
