NGC 1016 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E0 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 298 million light years from the Milky Way and about 175,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1007 , NGC 1008 , NGC 1020 , NGC 1021 .
The object was discovered on January 15, 1865 by the astronomer Albert Marth .
