NGC 1003 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is an estimated 33 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is a member of the NGC 1023 group.
The galaxies NGC 995 , NGC 996 , NGC 1000 , NGC 1005 are in the same area of the sky .
Rudolph Leo Bernhard Minkowski discovered a supernova in NGC 1003 in 1937 ; today it bears the designation SN 1937D and is assigned to type Ia .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on October 6, 1784 .
