Johann Jakob Vollweider (born May 24, 1834 in Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl , † November 5, 1891 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German painter and drawing teacher.

Life

Vollweider was the son of a master wagoner and first attended a village school. His teacher and the pastor, who became aware of his attempts at drawing, took care of him. The teacher gave him his first drawing lessons, the clergyman took care of his training. Vollweider was apprenticed to a lithographer in Karlsruhe by his advocate . He stayed here for 2 years before he was hired by the architect Friedrich Eisenlohr and instructed in drawing architecture, ornaments and perspectives. He applied to the newly founded Grand Ducal Baden State Art School . The director Johann Wilhelm Schirmer hired him in 1855 as a teacher of perspective and in 1861 helped him to the position of art school inspector. Schirmer was also his teacher and Vollweider now devoted himself to landscape painting and went on several study trips with him. In 1858 he was in Munich and in the Bavarian high mountains and made oil paintings. In 1861 he made a trip to Cologne, Düsseldorf and Belgium and in 1865 to the Swiss Alps and in 1867 to Paris. Until 1875 he was an art school inspector and teacher for perspective and shadow theory in Karlsruhe. After his retirement he lived in Bern until 1888 , where he married Sophie Luise (nee Sterchi, 1852-1891) from Unterseen and was no longer artistically active. 14 years later he moved to Freiburg im Breisgau. His work includes some lithographs and the publication of a textbook on perspective.
