NGC 989 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 333 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 80,000 ly. 
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 967 .
The object was discovered by the astronomer Francis Leavenworth on November 9, 1885.
