NGC 972 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sab in the constellation Aries on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 73 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 70,000 ly. The galaxy has an angular size of 3.3 '× 1.7' and an apparent magnitude of 11.3 mag.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy NGC 953 .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on September 11, 1784 .
