NGC 949 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Triangle in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 32 million light years from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light years in diameter.
Together with u. a. the galaxies NGC 891 , NGC 925 , NGC 959 , NGC 1003 , NGC 1023 , NGC 1058 and IC 239 it forms the NGC 1023 group .

The object was discovered on September 21, 1786 by the astronomer William Herschel .
