NGC 946 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Andromeda in the northern sky . It is an estimated 264 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 923 and NGC 937 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2016W was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on October 6, 1784 .
