NGC 942 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 201 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 170,000 ly. Together with NGC 943 , it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 309 or Holm 59 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 945 , NGC 948 , NGC 950 , IC 230 .
The property was discovered by Frank Muller in 1886 .
