NGC 931 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type Sbc in the constellation Triangle in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 228 million light years from the Milky Way and about 260,000 light years in diameter. The galaxies NGC 917 and NGC 940 are located in the same area of the sky .
The Supernova SN 2009lw was observed here.
The object was discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on September 26, 1865 .
