The locomotives of the HLE 27 series are a series of electric locomotives that have been used by the Belgian railways since 1981 to cover passenger and freight trains . In the 1980s, 60 vehicles were built and designated with the numbers from 2701 to 2760, all of which are still in use.
The subsequent series HLE 11 , HLE 12 and HLE 21 are almost identical, but they only have about 2/3 of the output of the HLE 27. In addition, the HLE 11 and HLE 12 can also be used across borders .
In 1991, locomotive 2711 carried a train with 70 passenger carriages , breaking the record for the “longest passenger train in the world”, set up two years earlier by locomotive 1607 of the Dutch class 1600/1800 with 60 drawn wagons.
Since 2006, in all locomotives MUX installed a shuttle train with her from the driving trailer type M6 can be controlled. In addition to push- pull train control, the machines 2742-2760 also have automatic central buffer couplings (type GF ) in order to be able to drive multiple unit-like wing trains on the axis Blankenberge / Knokke - Gent - Brussels - Leuven - Liège / Genk.
With the commissioning of the HLE 18 , the vehicles of the HLE 27 series will be largely displaced from their original area of application, the intercity trains with double-decker cars on main lines. Since the second half of 2012, P-trains (rush hour amplifiers ) and individual intercity trains have mainly been hauled; on weekends there are only a few services.
