NGC 1009 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 261 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 105,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1007 , NGC 1020 , NGC 1021 , IC 241 .
The object was discovered by Edward D. Swift on January 1, 1886 .
