NGC 1004 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 290 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light-years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1007 , NGC 1008 , NGC 1016 , NGC 1019 .
The object was discovered on December 1, 1880 by Édouard Stephan .
