NGC 1048 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 519 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light-years across. Together with PGC 10137 it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1033 , NGC 1042 , NGC 1047 , NGC 1052 .
The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on November 10, 1885.
