NGC 1071 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 511 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 185,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1033 , NGC 1048 , NGC 1064 , NGC 1069 , among others .
The property was discovered by Francis Preserved Leavenworth in 1886 .
