NGC 1083 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sp in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 180 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 85,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1076 , NGC 1081 , NGC 1089 , NGC 1105 , among others .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on September 29, 1886 .
