NGC 1085 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 304 million light years from the Milky Way and about 165,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 1836 , IC 1843 , IC 1844 .
The type II supernova SN 2003hk was observed here.
The object was discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on September 26, 1865 .
