IC 1843 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 304 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1085 , IC 1834 , IC 1836 , IC 1844 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 18, 1897 .
