NGC 1072 = IC 1837 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 359 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 160,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1055 , NGC 1068 , NGC 1090 .

The type II supernova SN 2004I was observed here.

The object was discovered on December 20, 1881 by Édouard Stephan (listed as NGC 1072 ) and on January 24, 1898 by Stéphane Javelle (listed as IC 1837 )
