NGC 1079 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a / P in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 61 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across.
Together with NGC 1097 , IC 1830 , PGC 10479 and PGC 10709 , it forms the NGC 1097 group .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on November 14, 1835 .
