NGC 1069 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type Sc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 425 million light years from the Milky Way and about 175,000 light years across. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1047 , NGC 1048 , NGC 1052 , NGC 1071 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on September 29, 1886 .
