NGC 1040 = NGC 1053 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is an estimated 220 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter.

The object was discovered by Édouard Stephan on December 9, 1871 .
