NGC 1055 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 45 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 100,000 ly. It is probably gravitationally bound to Messier 77 and, like NGC 1073 , belongs to the M77 group of galaxies .
In the same area of the sky there are still u. a. the galaxies NGC 1032 , NGC 1043 , NGC 1068 , NGC 1072 .
The object was discovered on December 18, 1783 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
