NGC 1042 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 61 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of 80,000 ly. Together with NGC 1035 and NGC 1052 , it forms the galaxy triplet KTS 18 .

The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on November 10, 1885 .
