NGC 1046 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 pec in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 272 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years across . It probably forms a bound galaxy trio together with NGC 1044 and PGC 3080165 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on November 7, 1784 .
