NGC 1087 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is 68 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. The object is a close neighbor of Messier 77 , physically they belong to the same galaxy group.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1090 , NGC 1094 , NGC 1104 , IC 1856 .
The type II supernova SN 1995V was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on October 9, 1785 .
