NGC 1099 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBb with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 335 million light years from the Milky Way and about 190,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1091 , NGC 1092 , NGC 1098 and NGC 1100 it forms the Hickson Compact Group 21 .

The property was discovered by Francis Preserved Leavenworth on October 17, 1885 .
