NGC 1098 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 331 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 170,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1091 , NGC 1092 , NGC 1099 and NGC 1100 it forms the Hickson Compact Group 21 .
The property was discovered by Francis Preserved Leavenworth on October 17, 1885 .
