Päivi Virta , b. Halonen , (born August 3, 1964 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active for many years with the Espoo Blues , the Keravan Shakers and Ilves Tampere in the Naisten SM-sarja . With the Finnish national team , she won several gold medals at European ice hockey championships and five bronze medals at world ice hockey championships .

Career

Päivi Virta (nee Halonen) was born in Tampere . Finland's first women's ice hockey team was formed in Tampere in 1971 and Halonen later joined them. In 1982 the Naisten SM-sarja was founded as the top division and Virta played in this for Ilves Tampere until 1990 . She won the Finnish championship three times in a row between 1985 and 1988, before moving to the Keravan Shakers in 1990 - after another championship title with Ilves . Virta won three more championship titles with the Shakers between 1994 and 1996.

From 1997 she played in Espoo ice hockey for Kiekko-Espoo , which renamed itself in 1998 Espoo Blues . Between 1999 and 2005 she won the Finnish championship seven times in a row with the Blues. In 2004 she was the first woman to be awarded the President's Trophy from the President of the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation .

During the 2005/06 season, she became the first Finnish woman to reach 400 major round games. In 2006 Virta ended her career after more than 24 years in the top division. During her long career she reached the record number of 408 main round games in the SM-sarja, in which she scored 117 goals and contributed 378 assists (495 points scorer). In another 107 playoff games, she came up with another 82 points scorer, in total she won 15 Finnish championship titles.

In 2008, their number # 33 was banned by the Espoo Blues.

In 2016 she was inducted into the Finnish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame as the 235th person overall in the Player category .

International

In 1987 the Finnish women's national team was founded, to which Haanpää belonged from the beginning and with which they won the first IIHF European Women's Championship in 1989 . At the first World Cup participation of the Finnish lionesses in Ottawa in 1990 , they defeated Sweden 6: 3 in the game for third place and thus won the bronze medal.

At world championships she completed a total of 24 games for Finland between 1990 and 2000, in which Virta collected 15 points scorer. In 1990, 1992, 1994, 1999 and 2000 she won the bronze medal with Finland. There are also four gold medals and one bronze medal at European championships.

Virta made a total of 97 international matches for Finland.
