Extreme E is a racing series for SUVs with electric motors that was initiated by Alejandro Agag and Gil de Ferran and is scheduled to take place worldwide from January 2021. The aim of the racing series is to illustrate the effects of climate change that are already visible today at particularly affected locations .

vehicles

In Extreme E, all teams compete with the same vehicle. The vehicles built by Spark Racing Technology are powered by two electric motors, which may have a maximum output of 500 kW (680 PS) and which can either be purchased by the organizers or developed by interested manufacturers themselves. The specification of the drives corresponds to that of the FIA Formula E championship . The vehicle's accumulator is a unitary component and comes from McLaren Electronic Systems , a subsidiary of the McLaren Group .

The manufacturers and teams are allowed to design the body of the car themselves in order to stand out visually from the competition.

The tires of the vehicles come from the standard supplier Continental .

Race locations

The races are held in different places on earth. What all places have in common is that the effects of climate change are already clearly visible here. The Arctic , the Himalayas , the Sahara , the Amazon rainforest and an island in the Indian Ocean have been announced as racing locations for the debut season . Each of the races focuses on specific consequences of climate change or environmental protection issues, including melting ice caps , glaciers , desertification , deforestation and plastic waste in the oceans, as well as rising sea levels .

To reach the race venues, vehicles, equipment and personnel, under the direction of David Mayer de Rothschild, will be transported on the former British mail ship St. Helena , which functions as a floating paddock . For this purpose, the ship will first be renovated and modernized. The transport will be climate-neutral , but thanks to a sail , the ship should reach a speed of seven knots without its own drive and consume 50 percent less fuel overall.

Course of a race

The races are held in tournament form on off-road courses. First six teams compete against each other in two groups. The four first placed in the group stage move on to the next round, which is played in the knockout system . The winner qualifies for the next round.

The stages should be between six and ten kilometers long. The drivers have to drive through several virtual gates.

reporting

Among other things, due to the lack of infrastructure at the race location, the racing series is not planned as a live event. The races will only be broadcast after the end of the season, and all participants must sign confidentiality agreements that they will keep the race results secret until then.

The film director Fisher Stevens acts as the artistic director of the racing series and produces a multi-part documentary of the races, which will be broadcast in October and November of each year over a period of five weeks. Ten episodes are to be created in the debut season.
