The RMS St Helena ( German  also RMS St. Helena ) is a former mail ship that connected the equal parts of St. Helena , Ascension and Tristan da Cunha of the British overseas territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha with the mainland and with each other. The ship has been named MNG Tahiti since April 2018 .

history

The combined cargo and passenger ship is measured with 6,767 GRT and with a crew of 56 offers space for 128 passengers. It is one of the last deep-sea mail ships in service for the British flag and was specially built and commissioned for this route in 1989/1990 at Hall, Russell & Company shipyard in Aberdeen. The St. Helena was both the shipyard's last newbuild and the last newbuild for a seagoing ship in Aberdeen. The ship replaced its predecessor, the RMS St. Helena from 1963.

With the opening of the St. Helena airport RMS should St. Helena cease operations on 15 July 2016th Thereafter, the sale in favor of the island was planned. Due to the postponement of the opening of the airport, the RMS St. Helena should run until July 2017. In December 2016 a further extension of the journeys was announced, and in October 2017 the decommissioning for February 2018 was announced. The RMS St. Helena stopped at St. Helena for the last time on January 29, 2018. The supply of the islands is now primarily handled by the multi-purpose cargo ship MV Helena .

The RMS St. Helena was supposed to leave St. Helena for the last time on February 11, but had to return to St. Helena for the last time on February 12 due to a medical emergency. The fourth from last active Royal Mail Ship officially ceased service on February 17, 2018 after 29 years. It was then launched in E-Berth, Duncan Dock, Cape Town.

The ship was then owned by MNG Maritime from April 2018 and was named MNG Tahiti with registration in St. Kitts and Nevis and home port in Basseterre . It was intended to be used as a floating armory in the Gulf of Oman .

In October 2018, MNG sold the ship and she returned to the United Kingdom, renamed St. Helena . Here it is extensively renovated and modernized in order to serve as a floating paddock for the Extreme E racing series in the future .

background

Until the 1960s, the island was called in regular mail service by various ships of the shipping company Union-Castle Line , which operated regularly between England and South Africa on behalf of the state . With the increasing air traffic, these lines were discontinued and the RMS St. Helena was the only remaining combined cargo and passenger ship that regularly called at the island.
