Alejandro Tarik Agag Longo (born September 18, 1970 in Madrid ) is a Spanish entrepreneur and former politician of the conservative PP . He was a member of the European Parliament and General Secretary of the European People's Party and is the son-in-law of the former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar .

Life

Alejandro Agag is the son of an Algerian banker and investment advisor. During his business administration studies at the Colegio Universitario de Estudios Financieros , he joined the conservative Partido Popular (PP). After the PP's victory in the Spanish parliamentary elections in 1996 , Agag became personal advisor to the newly elected Prime Minister José María Aznar .

In the European elections in 1999 he won a seat in the European Parliament for the PP . In the same year he was elected General Secretary of the European People's Party (EPP) to succeed Klaus Welle , and in 2000 he became General Secretary of the Christian Democratic International (CDI). However, he later announced that he would resign his political offices and pursue an economic career. On April 11, 2002, he therefore resigned from the European Parliament. In 2003 he resigned as CDI General Secretary, he was succeeded by Antonio López-Istúriz White .

On September 5, 2002, Agag married Ana Aznar Botella , the daughter of José María Aznar . The wedding became a major media event in Spain. It took place in the presence of the Spanish King Juan Carlos , the British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as well as numerous other Spanish personalities in the monastery complex of El Escorial .

After the end of his political career, Agag worked, among other things, at the Portuguese holding company Sociedade Lusa de Negócios , which also owns the Banco Português de Negócios bank . Agag also had contacts in the Formula 1 business and was involved when Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone bought the English football club Queens Park Rangers at the end of 2007 .

Since 2012 he has been CEO of Formula E Holdings , which he founded to market the FIA Formula E championship . In this role he is also referred to in the media as the promoter of the FIA ​​Formula E Championship.

He has received several awards for his entrepreneurial career, including from the Spanish edition of GQ magazine as "Entrepreneur of the Year"
