Tour promoter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A tour promoter (also tour promoter or tour organizer ) is economically and organizationally responsible for the implementation of tours of all kinds. This includes concert tours, show and theater productions, exhibitions and sporting events. The tour promoter usually makes an offer to the artist or producer or owner of the respective program. To conduct the tour, the tour promoter can contact local promoters such as B. Cooperate concert organizers, but this is not absolutely necessary.

In English-speaking countries, the tour promoter is sometimes referred to as a talent buyer .

Services

The main tasks of the tour promoter include, but are not limited to:

  • Economic conception of the tour (duration, type and size of the venues, local distribution (routing), production costs, price policy for tickets )
  • Develop an agreement with the artist or producer or owner of the program (e.g. theater producer )
  • Selection and booking of event locations (halls, arenas, theaters), possibly in cooperation with local organizers (promoters)
  • Negotiation and conclusion of guest performance contracts with local organizers
  • Development of a positioning and marketing concept for the tour
  • Possibly. Acquisition of sponsors for the tour
  • Development and implementation of the marketing plan , e.g. B. usually measures the outdoor advertising includes
  • Control of the marketing measures of any partners, such as B. local organizer
  • Public relations and press work
  • Planning, implementation and control of advance ticket sales (ticketing), e.g. B. in cooperation with service providers such as ticket systems or local advance booking offices
  • Booking and handling of the entire event technology and tour logistics
  • Travel management , often using so-called nightliner tour buses
  • Obtaining insurance for risks
  • Possibly. Obtaining performance rights from GEMA or publishers
  • Tour management, carried out by the tour manager or tour leader of the tour promoter
  • Collection , accounting , billing with all partners involved, taking into account tax aspects such as B. Tax on foreigners when foreign actors are employed

Liability and Risk

The scope of the advance payments of the tour promoter makes it necessary that he has to have substantial funds to pre-finance the tour, such as B. the guarantees for the artist or producer, marketing measures or tour logistics. He can do this through own funds or outside financing. In addition, the tour promoter is the contractual partner for all parties involved in a tour. The earnings of the tour promoter to compensate for the associated risks are essentially dependent on the sales success of the tour, which cannot be determined with certainty in advance - but it is also dependent on solid preparation and calculation of the tour.

The tour promoter is also moving in an economically difficult environment due to the steadily increasing implementation costs (e.g. for GEMA, hall rental, logistics and outdoor advertising) and intense competition. The economic and entrepreneurial risks that tour promoters take for a tour are therefore fundamentally high. Precise market knowledge, experience and specialist knowledge in all sub-areas - from program selection to accounting - are therefore required.

The tour promoter can be held liable for the following groups (extract):

  • Liability to local organizers
  • Liability to hall operators
  • Liability to visitors
  • Liability to own staff
  • Liability towards actors, artists, contributors
  • Liability to sponsors, media partners
  • Liability to third parties, such as B. service providers or rights holders

education

In Germany there are no specialized training opportunities for the profession of tour promoter or concert organizer. Sometimes modern courses in business administration , marketing or other management or business studies are mentioned as beneficial, especially in an international context; a certain cultural education is also required. In the UK and US, there are several continuing education and academic courses specifically related to concert promotion and venue management. For example, New York University offers corresponding certificate courses.
