Klaus Welle
Klaus Welle (born July 3, 1964 in Beelen , Warendorf district ) is a German politician and has been Secretary General of the European Parliament since March 2009 .
Life
After graduating from high school Laurentianum in Warendorf in 1984, training at the Westdeutsche Landesbank in Münster and studying economics at the University of Witten / Herdecke with a focus on institutional theory and banking, in 1991 he became head of the European and foreign policy department in the federal office of CDU . He worked there under the general secretaries Volker Rühe and Peter Hintze . From 1989 to 1998 he was a member of the Federal Board of the Junge Union as spokesman for European and foreign policy.
At the suggestion of the chairman of the European People's Party Wilfried Martens , the EPP elected him as its general secretary in 1994 . During his term of office until 1999, the EPP opened up to numerous conservative parties and new members from the EU accession countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the founding of the Young European People's Party, the European Senior Citizens' Union and the EPP Association for SMEs (SME Union).
From 1999 to 2004, Welle was Secretary General of the Group of the European People's Party in the European Parliament .
From January 1, 2004, he was Director General for Internal Policy in the European Parliament. When the European Parliament elected Hans-Gert Pöttering (EPP) as its new President in January 2007 , Klaus Welle was appointed head of the President's Cabinet.
On March 16, 2009, Welle took up the post of Secretary General of the European Parliament as the successor to Harald Rømer, who was retiring from Denmark. In connection with parliament-subsidized holidays for the children of members of parliament, Welle was criticized in February 2010 for a lack of transparency in budget management.
FAZ correspondent Werner Mussler described Welle as the strategic head behind the idea of running in the 2014 European elections with a top candidate (not included in the treaties) ; Juncker also owes his office to the "string puller" wave.
