Tōru Tanabe ( Japanese 田 辺 と お る Tanabe Tōru ; born January 6, 1961 in Yokohama , Kanagawa Prefecture ) is a Japanese opera singer (baritone) and actor .

Life

The baritone Tanabe received his singing and opera training after studying piano and flute in his hometown and at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg at the Musashino University in Tokyo (graduation with distinction) and at the Graz University of Applied Sciences . He is the winner of the singing competition "Italo-Giappone" (Tokyo) and the international opera competition "A. Catalani “(East / Italy). He has been working as an opera singer in Germany since 1992 and was a member of the soloist ensemble of the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater Halberstadt between 1995 and 1999 . In recent years he has performed numerous concerts and guest performances with roles in German and Italian operas, operettas and musicals, mainly in the character baritone category, on various stages in Japan and Germany.

Tōru Tanabe has already played in various television dramas (including "SOKO Leipzig") and commercials. A larger audience was he as a German voice actor of the Oscar -nominated actor Ken Watanabe in the films The Last Samurai , Batman Begins , Inception and (2014) Godzilla known.

Another expression of his versatility are his appearances with the pianist Matthias Graeff-Schestag at various German anime and manga events , such as B. the Connichi des Animexx e. V. in Kassel, the Shumatsu des Aniversum Dresden e. V. in Dresden and AniMaCo in Berlin. There he performs old and new Japanese songs, the text of which he has translated into German, and interprets well-known anime soundtracks in German and Japanese.

Tanabe lived mainly in Germany until 2007 and then became a lecturer at the Kunitachi Ongaku Daigaku ( 国立 音 楽 大学 , about "Kunitachi Music Academy") in Tachikawa .

In December 2018, Tanabe announced that it would run for the People's Democratic Party in the 2019 upper house election in the Ishikawa Prefecture constituency (two seats, one for election). He was defeated there with 32.8% of the votes incumbent Shūji Yamada ( LDP ; 67.2%).
