In the second section, the plot focuses essentially on the relationship between Tomoya and Nagisa, who want to start a family after graduating from school. But Nagisa's weak physical condition comes to the fore again, so that she does not manage to graduate with Tomoya. Instead, Tomoya begins leaving his father's apartment and starts working as an electrician, while Nagisa recovers and eventually graduates. As the two got closer and closer, they decide to have a child. However, a stroke of fate occurs at birth. Because although her daughter Ushio is doing well, Nagisa does not survive the hardships of the birth and dies immediately at his side.

Completely shaken, Tomoya worked too much in the following years to suppress this, neglecting his daughter Ushio, whom he had given into the care of Nagisa's parents. After several years, they attempt to bring Tomoya together with his daughter, who until then had only met her father as an uncle. Despite the mutual dislike, which, however, emanates more from Tomoya, the two experience an excursion on that day that makes Tomoya reflect on the past five years. Almost guilty, Tomoya wants to do justice to the role of a father from now on. But Ushio, who is very similar to her mother, suffers from the same physical ailments as Nagisa. So Ushio gets seriously ill in winter and after a while she wishes to go on another trip. Troubled by his conscience, Tomoya decides to grant his daughter's wish. But after the first few meters, Ushio collapses and also dies in his arms. In desperation, he cries out for Nagisa's help. Since before that he received a magical light that can fulfill a wish when he got along with his father, he finds himself next to Nagisa at the time of Ushio's birth.

Origin and publications

After the completion of the first season of Clannad , the sequel Clannad - After Story was announced in the credits with a fifteen-second preview. The series was also animated by the studio Kyōto Animation under the direction of Tatsuya Ishihara . Accordingly, the same people were also involved in the development.

The series has a total of 24 episodes and was broadcast from October 3, 2008 to March 27, 2009 after midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on the Japanese television station TBS in standard definition (NTSC) and trimmed to 4: 3. A week later, from October 9, 2008, the other broadcasters BS-i, CBC and MBS also had the opportunity to show the series in widescreen format and in HDTV. The series was released in Japan on a total of eight DVDs, which were released between December 3, 2008 and July 1, 2009. This was followed on April 20, 2011 by a Blu-Ray box with English subtitles, which despite its high recommended retail price of 62,580 yen or € 521 at the time, was the third best-selling  Blu-Ray release in the week of publication.

The series was supplemented on July 1, 2009 by an additional OVA episode Clannad - After Story: Mō Hitotsu no Sekai Kyō-hen ( CLANNAD 〜AFTER STORY〜 も う ひ と つ の 世界 杏 編 ). It represented an alternative event in which the sisters Ryō and Kyō both fall in love with Tomoya. Kyō deliberately gives priority to her little sister, although Tomoya is actually only in love with Kyō. Ultimately, both sisters manage to overcome this uncomfortable situation, and Kyō confesses their love for Tomoya.

Outside of Japan, the series was released in Taiwan from June 2009 by Proware Multimedia International. In the United States, the series was licensed by Sentai Filmworks and was then localized by ADV Films with English subtitles and the first DVD distributed on October 20, 2009. However, after ADV Films gave up the business at the end of 2009 and sold it to Section23 Films, they released the first DVD on that date and then the second DVD on December 8, 2009. This version was also broadcast on The Anime Network. A new DVD version was released on April 19, 2011, this time an English dubbing. Siren Visual also produced the series in English for DVD region 4, i. H. specifically Australia and New Zealand , licensed and released on April 1, 2011.

On February 26, 2015, the German publisher FilmConfect announced that it had secured the license for the series. By December 2015, the publisher released four volumes of six episodes each.
