Tomoko Kawakami

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tomoko Kawakami ( Japanese 川 上 と も 子 , real name: 川 上 倫 子 , both Kawakami Tomoko ; born April 25, 1970 in Tokyo Prefecture ; † June 9, 2011 ) was a Japanese voice actress ( seiyū ).

Life

Tomoko Kawakami had an older sister and, like her, originally wanted to become a doctor. Since her father died early, her mother could not afford the necessary expenses for both of them, so Tomoko Kawakami turned to acting. During her school days, she took acting lessons at Baobab Gakuen, which is part of the Production Baobab talent agency, and was later signed by the agency. After graduating from school, she studied acting at the Tōhō-Gakuen Art School , where she then concentrated on dubbing.

Her first, as yet nameless, role was in 1994 in the anime series Metal Fighter Miku . In 1995 her first supporting role as Chiriko in Fushigi Yuugi followed . She had her breakthrough in 1997 with the title role of Utena in Shōjo Kakumei Utena . She was also known as Hikaru Shindo in Hikaru no Go from 2001 to 2003, and since 2004 as Fuyuki Hinata in Keroro Gunsō (Sgt. Frog), and as Misuzu Kamio in the computer game Air and its anime adaptations. From 2008 she had to seek treatment for ovarian cancer , could hardly take on roles and finally succumbed to the disease on June 9, 2011 at the age of 41.
