Ape Escape 2 ( Jap.サルゲッチュ2, Saru Get You 2, Saru Getchu 2! ) Is a 3D - Jump 'n' Run game for Sony's PlayStation 2 and the successor of Ape Escape . Unlike its predecessor, this title was first released on July 18, 2002 in Japan and only a year later in the USA and Europe .
Since 2016, the title, including trophy support and visual enhancement, has been available as a download for the PlayStation 4 .
action
The game takes place a few years after the events of the first part, when Kakeru ( Spike in Ape Escape ) prevented the ape Specter from conquering the world. The professor has taken a vacation for some time and hired his granddaughter Natsumi ( Katie in Ape Escape) and Spike's cousin Hikaru ( Jimmy in the US version) to look after the laboratory. Above all, the two should take care of transporting a load of monkey pants to the monkey park . However, Hikaru not only sends the pants, but inadvertently sends the Peak Point helmets with them. To his amazement, he sees the monkeys in the helmets pour out of the park on the screen, followed by a white monkey leading them: Specter . This is now a second time to rule the world with his monkey army. This time he is additionally supported by the five crazy monkeys ( Freaky Monkey Five ) - five special monkeys that Specter supplied with Vita-Z bananas , which make them considerably more intelligent and stronger than the normal monkeys. Each of them represents a special characteristic and is named after a color: blue , yellow , pink , white and red , in ascending order. Hikaru immediately sets out to clean up the disaster he has caused and to recapture all the monkeys. He is accompanied by Pipotchi , a baby monkey with a special Pipo helmet that makes the person who wears him friendly and helpful.
On his way, Hikaru manages to catch all the crazy monkeys with the exception of the yellow one. Before his fight with the white monkey, however, Pipotchi is kidnapped. The data in his special Peak Point helmet should help complete Specter's secret weapon - the lethargy laser . Hikaru pursues Pipotchi's kidnappers to a monkey military base and confronts Specter there. However, to the surprise of both, the upcoming confrontation is interrupted by the yellow monkey , who has overdosed on Vita-Z bananas and has now grown to a giant size. While Hikaru confronts the monster, shrinks it again and catches it, Specter manages to escape. In the meantime, the professor and Natsumi discover that the lethargy laser is in Specter's moon base and that if it were shot down on Earth it would break all people's resistance to resistance, so that nothing stands in the way of Specter's rule. Without hesitation, Hikaru goes to the moon and faces Specter , who attacks him with his new robot Ultra Goliath . After Hikaru wins the fight, Specter threatens to shoot down the lethargy laser and advises Hikaru to surrender. However, he explains to him that people never give up and catches Specter before he can press the switch, thus freeing Pipotchi . The two flee from the exploding moon base and return to earth by space shuttle .
Once there, however, they discover that Specter escaped shortly before their arrival and is now gathering the remaining monkeys. Hikaru sets out to capture all of the remaining monkeys while the professor struggles to find out Specter's whereabouts. Both succeed in their task and Hikaru meets Specter in a final duel , who loses the fight and is eventually caught. The story comes to an end when Kakeru visits the laboratory after a long time and Hikaru accidentally destroys it when he accidentally makes an emergency landing there with his space shuttle.
Characters
Heroes / Allies
- Hikaru ( ヒ カ ル, Hikaru in the Japanese version , Jimmy in the US version ) is the main character of the game and Kakeru's cousin, the hero of the first part. He is a year younger than Kakeru and, like him, very friendly, brave, determined and simple-minded. His greatest dream is to be a true hero, which he is given the opportunity to do when Natsumi sends him on a monkey hunt.
- The professor ( ハ カ セ, Hakase in the Japanese version) is the inventor of the Peak Point helmets . He takes a vacation at the beginning of the game and leaves the laboratory to his granddaughter Natsumi and Hikaru .
- Natsumi ( ナ ツ ミ, Natsumi in the Japanese version, Natalie in the US version, Katie in Ape Escape ) is the professor's granddaughter and takes care of the laboratory in his absence. Hikaru helps her , who triggers the monkey mess through his carelessness. She sends him off to recapture all the apes that have escaped.
- Kakeru ( カ ケ ル, Kakeru in the Japanese version, Spike in Ape Escape and the US version) is Hikaru's older cousin and the hero of the first part. He followed Specter across time then and finally caught him. He visits the professor's lab after a long time at the end of the game.
- Pipotchi (Japanese ピ ポ ッ チ, Pipocchi ) is Hikaru's little house monkey. He has a newly developed Pipo helmet that makes him helpful and friendly instead of arousing bad intentions. Specter used the technology of the helmet to complete the lethargic laser that would render all humanity willless. Pipotchi helps Hikaru in a variety of ways, providing him with useful tips or restoring a life point if Hikaru loses all of them.
Bad guys
- Specter (Japanese ス ペ ク タ ー, Supekutā ) is the villain of the game and tried to conquer the world with his monkey army in the first part. He was captured by Kakeru but regained a Pipo helmet and now challenges Hikaru as he resumes his old plans for world domination.
- The Blue Monkey (Japanese ウ ッ キ ー ブ ル ー, Ukī Burū , Blue Monkey ) is the first member of the Five Crazy Monkeys to meet in combat. He has a very cool demeanor and is extremely quick. He rides a motorized unicycle , which requires the use of a sprint tire to be able to defeat him.
- The yellow monkey (Japanese ウ ッ キ ー イ エ ロ ー, Ukī Ierō , Yellow Monkey ) is extremely large and fat. He's particularly feminine , which suggests that he would like to be feminine. When Hikaru fights him for the first time, he flees after his defeat. Hikarus and Specter's duel is later interrupted when he shows up in monstrous size after eating an overload of Vita-Z bananas . When Hikaru defeats him, he shrinks to tiny size and is even smaller than Pipotchi , which suggests that he owed his standard size to the Vita-Z bananas .
- The Pink Monkey (Japanese ウ ッ キ ー ピ ン ク, Ukī Pinko , Pink Monkey ) is the only female member of the Five Crazy Monkeys and appears as a pop singer . However, behind her cute looks she also hides a dark side. If she gets angry, her hair stands on end and her voice becomes noticeably darker. The fight with her takes place on her stage while she is singing her song. After a few hits, she transforms and the environment becomes gloomy as she attacks more destructively.
- The white monkey (Japanese ウ ッ キ ー ホ ワ イ ト, Ukī Howaito, White Monkey ) is the most intelligent of all five members, but the weakest in terms of strength. However, he makes up for this with his ability to build robots. When he gets to Hikaru's data, he builds Mecha Hikaru , a large robot that resembles Hikaru in appearance and equipment, including devices. However, his plan to initiate Pipotchi's kidnapping and thus to help complete the lethargy laser fails.
- The red monkey (Japanese ウ ッ キ ー レ ッ ド, Ukī Reddo , Red Monkey ) is number one in the team and the strongest in terms of strength. You meet him in a fight ring in which he pretends to be a wrestler and attacks Hikaru with all kinds of physical attacks.
Gameplay
The controls of the game have remained almost the same as its predecessor. The analog sticks are used to control the character, the action buttons as placeholders for the devices. The latter include three new devices among the devices already available in the predecessor: the electromagnet to move metal blocks and steal armor from special opponents, the water cannon to extinguish blocking fires and the bananerang , a kind of boomerang in the shape of a banana, which smells some Attracts monkeys and lures them out of their hiding places. It is also now possible to jump by pressing the two right shoulder buttons on the controller .
Another novelty is the gotcha box in the intermediate station, with which a surprise ball can be drawn for every ten gold pieces, which contains one of the following bonuses, which can be examined in the shelf collection after receipt:
- Comic strip
- Monkey tale
- Piece of music ( soundtrack )
- Remote control car model
- Film ( cutscenes )
- Concept art
- Secret photo
- Level photo
- Opponent photo
- Mini game
Captured monkeys are still listed in the Affcyclopedia and made available for viewing along with their data. You can see the monkey's name, statistics and, more recently, the color of his pants. The statistics now also include the stomach contents , information that provides information about whether the monkey in question is reacting to the banana rang . Monkeys with a full stomach cannot be attracted to the smell of bananas. The trouser colors now also include monkeys with colorful trousers . These are mostly monkeys in a special costume (e.g. knight , clown , mermaid ), which means that the color of the trousers cannot be recognized. The latter have special attack patterns and extraordinary behavior.
For the first time, the player gets support from the baby monkey Pipotchi while playing . This sometimes helps to achieve a slightly higher lead by lifting the player a little bit at the end of a jump with the help of his little wings. If the player loses his last life point in the form of a biscuit, he is revived once by Pipotchi's emergency biscuit . He also often gives tips on which device must be used in which places to cross an obstacle.
