Skies of Arcadia , published in Japan as Eternal Arcadia ( Japanese エ タ ー ナ ル ア ル カ デ ィ ア , Etānaru Arukadia ) is a role-playing game that was developed by Overworks for Dreamcast and published by Sega in 2000 and ported to the Gamecube in 2002.

Game mechanics

In Skies of Arcadia you explore dungeons and cities that are located on different, flying continents that can be traveled by airship. Every continent has its own civilization and climate zone. Since the in-game world is a sphere, there are no unnatural boundaries. The fights are divided into ground and aerial combat. Ground battles are similar to those from other Japanese role-playing games (such as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest ), each character has special attacks and can acquire different spells. There are 6 different types of magic, each with a different focus. The air battles, however, are fought with the airship. The turn-based battle system also applies here, with the ship's capabilities playing a major role. In the course of the game, the player gains control of various airships, which have different strengths and are freely accessible. It is also possible to set up and expand your own pirate hideout. Attentive players can track down a lot of hidden places and make a name for themselves through a title system.

action

The heroes of the game are Vyse , son of the captain of the air pirates and Aika , a loyal pirate who is always by Vyses side. In the world of Skies of Arcadia , people live on floating continents and islands. Fearless air pirates explore the unknown areas of this world with their airships. Always on the lookout for treasures and unimagined territories, the air pirates roam the sky until one day they come across a battleship of the Valuan Empire and take their chance. After a battle, the air pirates finally succeed in taking over the ship and set off with innumerable treasures and an unconscious prisoner from the Valuan Empire on their way home to the Pirate Isle. Once there, the story of the enigmatic prisoner named Fina deepens . When suddenly a fleet from the Valuan Empire approaches and captures the pirates and Fina, Vyse and Aika swear revenge and set off to free their friends. When that is done, they go in search of the Moon Crystals , six mystical objects that come from the ancient Moon civilization and with whose help one can control the Gigas ; Big robots with which nothing stands in the way of the people of Valua .

“Skies of Arcadia has everything a good role-playing game needs: a fascinating story, motivating fights, numerous puzzles and a very harmonious atmosphere. RPG fans with GameCube should definitely grab it - not just because of the lack of alternatives. "
