Chrno Crusade ( Japanese ク ロ ノ ク ル セ イ ド , kurono kuruseido ) is a manga series by the Japanese draftsman Daisuke Moriyama , which also forms the basis for an anime .

action

The series is set in New York in the 1920s . The main characters are the rather unorthodox exorcist of the Magdalena order Rosette Christopher and her assistant Chrno (in the anime: Chrono), one of many devils who hides his true identity behind a human body. United they fight against evil and against the devil Aion.

Both work for the Magdalena Order, an order of the Church of a different kind: They have made it their business to protect humanity from monsters and devils. This also includes the "7 apostles"; to which "Asmaria Henrique" (in the anime: Azmaria Hendric) and "Joshua Christopher" - Rosette's brother - belong. The devil hunt is not done through prayer, but with special weapons developed by "Senior" / "Elder", a member of the order. He developed the balls "Sacred" (filled with consecrated oil), "Gospel" (made of special silver with golden incantations in runic form) and "Spirit" (contains a real, little devil).

These balls help Rosette to hunt the devil. But she and Chrno are after a certain devil: The "Sinner Aeon" / "Sinner Aion". He kidnapped her brother "Joshua" four years ago. Aeon needed the apostles to "change heaven to earth and earth to heaven". Every apostle has healing powers and one quality: Joshua z. B. embodies hope, Asmaria embodies charity.

In the fight against evil, Rosette and Chrno are supported by Satella Harvenheit. She is of German descent and a "Jewel-Witch". She has a lot of money and hates devils because her clan was destroyed by devils. Nevertheless, she does not give up and looks for her older sister. As the story progresses, Rosette and Satella and even Chrno become friends, even though the two women keep trying to profile each other as better.

The sinners

Aeon and Chrno stood on the same side once and fought with others against the pandemonium. Chrno was known as the "Hundredslayer". Terrifying and ruthless. Aeon took him into his legion and wanted to build a new world order with him. To reach this new world, Aeon had to assemble the 7 apostles and take possession of the head of the pandemonium. However, this meant going against pandemonium - which is a sin. Hence, all of Aeon's followers are called sinners. They include Aeon and Chrno, Sheda, Wido, Jenay and Lizeel.

History of Rosette and Joshua

Joshua and Rosette are siblings who grew up in an orphanage after their parents died. Rosette is the strong, energetic and always happy sister. Joshua the ailing, weak and dependent brother.

Joshua is visited regularly by Father Remington, who offers to accept him into the Magdalene Order because of his skills. Rosette knows about it and therefore regularly takes refuge with Joshua in the forest, because she does not want her brother to be taken away from her. During one of these "excursions" they unintentionally end up in an underground tunnel that leads to a crypt where they find Chrno. Unbiased as she is, first she and then Joshua make friends with Chrno. They spend a lot of time together and let Chrno tell them stories.

A few months later, Rosette shows up at Chrno late in the evening. She is deeply shocked that Joshua has decided to join the Magdalene Order. Before Chrno has a chance to comfort her, Aeon suddenly appears in the shape of an eagle. He offers to give Chrno his horns back when he joins him again. Chrno firmly refuses. But Aeon reveals to him that he had already expected it and therefore to have given the horns to someone else - Joshua.

In panic, Chrno assumes his demonic form and flies back to the orphanage with Rosette. Chaos has already broken out there, as Joshua cannot handle the powers he has been given and is almost insane. He gathers all his strength and freezes the entire orphanage and the surrounding area, including residents, where he almost catches Rosette and Chrno, who have just landed.

Rosette is shocked by her brother's act and yells at him that he is no longer "her Joshua", which brings him to his senses for a short time. He just manages to warn her when his powers break out of him again.

Chrno flees again with Rosette back into the forest, where his strength is now finally exhausted. Desperate, Rosette asks him to help her, and so Chrno reluctantly tells her about how to make a contract with a devil and give him life.

Although she is aware of the consequences, Rosette agrees. Chrno reluctantly agrees, since he remembers Magdalena's fate, but he knows that Rosette has no chance without him and feels responsible, as it is his horns that caused this misfortune.

Thereupon Rosette joined the Magdalena Order together with Chrno.

After the fight against Aeon, Chrno remains lost for a long time. But Rosette firmly believes in his return and fights bravely to stay alive. She is very weak and sickly because she does not have much time due to the contract.

In the manga , she suffers from a severe heart attack while sitting alone in a church. She is afraid of dying without having seen Chrno one last time, but suddenly he appears at the last moment and she takes refuge in his arms.

In the anime , Rosette and Chrno have retired to a house in the mountains together because they both know they don't have much time left. They die together on a swing, where Asmaria later finds them. Shall they rest in peace ...

Prehistory to Chrono

After Chrno, together with Aeon and the rest of the demons that followed them, had brought down the pandemonium, they kidnapped Saint Magdalena from the Magdalena order, because she was supposed to find the head of the pandemonium with her visionary and prophetic abilities.

To Chrno's great astonishment, Magdalena did not offer any resistance during the kidnapping - she even went with him voluntarily and later also managed to establish a close friendly relationship with the other demons on the flight ship "Eden".

However, when problems arise in extracting the information from the pandemonium's brain, in which Magdalena becomes possessed by it and Jenay and Lizeel are badly injured, the peace is over.

Aeon orders Chrno to kill Magdalena in order to get to the information of the pandemonium now in her brain. As with her kidnapping, Magdalena accepts her fate in silence and reveals to Chrno that she had foreseen her death as a little girl. Chrno, however, refuses to kill her and faces Aeon, who breaks off his horns in the ensuing fight. With the last of his strength, Chrno manages to hurt Aeon and then falls together with Magdalena of Eden.

Miraculously they survive the fall, but Chrno is dying because of the loss of his horns and tons of blood. Magdalena sees only one way to keep him alive: she makes a contract with him.

In the following weeks Chrno and Magdalena travel west, always on the run from Aeon, who they know is following them. But Magdalena's condition is getting worse from day to day, which is partly due to the obsession with the pandemonium and partly due to the contract she has concluded with Chrno.

When they are already feeling safe, Chrno meets Sheda on the way to a waterhole. He suddenly realizes that Magdalena is in danger and rushes back to her, where he can only throw himself between Aeon and her. He is pierced by Aeon's arm and Magdalena is also seriously injured. Then the anger breaks out of him, he sets, without paying attention to Magdalena, his demonic powers free to freeze Aeon.

Again he flees with her, but any help comes too late. Magdalena dies.

Shortly thereafter, Chrno is found by the members of the Magdalena Order, including the young Father Remington, and then locked in a crypt with Magdalena's coffin so that she will never cause harm again. Later Rosette and Joshua find him in this tomb.

Prehistory to Sathela

Sathela grew up safe and sound in her noble parents' house, together with her older sister Florette. Although she loved her sister dearly, Sathela suffered from the fact that her skills as a "jewel witch" were not very well developed. Her sister, however, was considered to be almost outstanding, which made Aeon aware of her.

One night he broke into her house, killed everyone but Sathela, and took Florette with him.

Since then, she and her butler have always been on the lookout for the "devil without horns" and never gave up hope of finding her beloved sister again. In the course of the story she discovers that this one of Aeon's subordinates is, however, now called "Fiole", and draws new courage.

When Sathela manages to get her to fight, it turns out that Florette was actually killed during the attack and that a jewel-making, fighting and deadly puppet was created from her remains - Fiole.

As they continue their fight, Sathela is crushed and seriously injured. With the last of her strength, she manages to throw herself into Fiole's lap and snuggle up to her like in her childhood memory. In her embrace with Fiole, she holds her stone of the “Infinite Protector” in her left hand and gives him the last command “Pierce”. Sathela and Fiole are pierced by a crystal blade. In these last minutes of her existence, shreds of Fioles memories of the time together with Sathela penetrate her memory and the vessel, Fiole, splinters and drives into the astral line. Chrno and Azmaria find Sathela leaning against a tree and Sathela's last request to Azmaria is to hear her singing for the last time. During the song, she dies.

In the manga, Sathela uses a jewel called "June of Mutual Love" while lying in Fiole's arms. As a result, they are both incapacitated and crystallized. This effect could only be reversed in 1999. Sathela learns how her friends' lives have gone and decides to go on living as bravely as her.

The astral line

The astral line is a normally invisible river above people's heads. In him are the souls of all the dead. Whenever a soul animates a body or when a person dies the astral line becomes active. Devils can use the energy of this current and only thereby acquire their strong powers. A devil can only absorb this vital energy if he has horns.
