It Came from the Desert is a video game adaptation by the Finnish director Marko Mäkilaakso from 2017. The Finnish-Canadian-British co-production is loosely based on the computer game of the same name by Cinemaware from 1989.
action
The shy Brian stands in the shadow of his best friend Lukas, a fanatical and somewhat crazy motocross driver. Brian is looking forward to a trip to the desert, not only because he can meet his great idol there, the actor who played the "Eradicator", but because Lukas has also invited Lisa, whom Brian has been eyeing for a long time. The three set off into the desert, but Brian thinks all the time that Lisa is into Lukas.
So there are embarrassing scenes at the desert festival and Brian disappears. Lukas finds his friend and is about to convince him to go back when they discover a secret underground laboratory. Of course they enter the facility and are promptly attacked by a human-sized giant ant. They call Lisa for help, which one of the ants can take care of. Then they come across a video message from Dr. Renard, who explains that it is a failed experiment and that it is imperative to keep the ants away from ethanol . And so the events take their course: The desert festival is overrun and the participants kidnapped.
Brian, Lukas and Lisa decide to stop the ants, but are separated. Lisa and Brian get closer on the run. Just as they are about to kiss, Lisa is kidnapped. Brian and Lukas find the ants 'nest and realize that the humans are still alive but should serve as food for the ants' children. They find a way to free Lisa and are now trying to destroy the ants with super weapons that they found in the laboratory. Then they want to extinguish the brood with fire.
In a spectacular showdown they succeed in destroying the queen ant, defeating the remaining ants, freeing the people and smoking out the nest.

It is in It Came from the Desert more of a tribute than a straight adaptation of the video game Cinema goods from 1989. Thus, the action is the game rather than history and are made on the computer game classics some allusions addition, scenes, see the End credits of the film.
The film had its world premiere at the Fantasy Filmfest 2017 . The film was released in Germany on April 5, 2018 via Tiberius Film on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Reviews
The film is a representative of the trash film and conceived as a B-film , although the budget was significantly higher. In his review for Film-Rezensions.de, Oliver Armknecht speaks of the fact that the "trashy roots [of the film] have been spruced up and proudly brought to the fore". And further:
“Only some gags ignite properly, with others the humor is too cramped. A classic like the game was, no, the screen version isn't. In the end it is too harmless for that and without its own identity, it does too little to distinguish itself from other animal monster films. As a crowd pleaser for an audience hungry for blood and gag, the horror comedy fulfills its purpose. "
In the television magazine TV Today, however, the film was panned:
“The parody of monster movies not only of the 50s (“ Tarantula ”,“ Formicula ”etc.) is sloppily put together. Very stupid: All movie quotes are declared to be dummies (yes, the kitchen scene of course means " Jurassic Park ", yes, the people in the cocoon " Aliens " etc.). "
