Angry Birds - The film is a Finnish - American animated film by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly , which was released in German cinemas on May 12, 2016 and in US cinemas on May 20, 2016. The film is based on the Angry Birds computer game series .
action
A community of colorful birds lives in the middle of the ocean on an idyllic island . Even if you can't fly, you can enjoy your life here to the fullest. The birds Red and Bomb and the racing bird Chuck must take an anti-aggression course. Red, who is a rather grumpy fellow, usually avoids the happy residents of the island, but has now been condemned by a judge to this therapy with the white bird lady Mathilde. One day a ship with a group of green pigs docks on the island, whose inhabitants have never been visited before. Nevertheless, they give them a warm welcome; only Red doesn't really trust the strangers, even if the pigs have brought some interesting, technologically sophisticated gifts for the naive natives. He is said to be right, because soon the pigs led by Leonard show that they are in truth real villains and are only after the birds' valuable eggs. After the pigs have stolen all of the birds' eggs, they go to their fort and gather for a feast.
In order to thwart this plan, the vigilante led by Red come up with some countermeasures, and the Angry Birds , which now also include the new allies Mathilde and the fat Terence, who they know from therapy, hope for help from the powerful Eagle , who lives secluded on a mountain and is the only bird that could fly at least in the distant past. When they counterattack they use the gifts the pigs brought with them, such as the motorbikes, the slingshots, the many explosives and the trampoline, with which the birds can fly for at least a few seconds. Red can finally put his anger at the service of the community.
production
Production history
The first offshoot of the Angry Birds computer game series was launched by the Finnish software company Rovio Entertainment at the end of 2009 and has since developed into one of the most successful computer games of all time. It was the first mobile game series to be downloaded more than a billion times. In 2013 it became known that a film adaptation of the very simple computer game was planned, which, however, did not have a special narrative as a template . Rovio signed a contract with Sony Pictures Entertainment in May 2013 for further exploitation of the Angry Birds as a film. With the release of the film, the game officially became the first filmed app .
Differences to the template
The film combines elements of the original games and the animated series based on them. What sets him apart is the fact that the pigs live here on a completely different island than the birds. In the series, Terence is officially referred to as Red's brother, while the two meet for the first time here in therapy. Another new feature is that birds and pigs have limbs here, whereas in the games and the series they seem to consist only of heads and tails.
Rod
The work on the film is the directorial debut of Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis . Jon Vitti , who previously wrote the television series The Simpsons for many years, took over the work on the script .

Reviews
The film won over 44 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .
The dpa describes the film as an action-packed and quite funny animation adventure in which the violence is packaged in such a way that smaller children can watch without hesitation. It also says: There are some successful gags that even adults laugh at. However, 'Angry Birds' is also a film that adults usually only watch for their children and that should hardly have any effect. He lacks the depth that makes a cartoon more than just a cartoon adventure.
Martin Schwickert of the Stuttgarter Zeitung thinks that the directors and the screenwriter have developed a viable story from the narrative rudiments of the game template and describes: The fact that anger, distrust or just being bad-tempered have their own right to exist in the cosmos of emotions a sympathetic message that makes the film the soulmate of ' everything is upside down '. Schwickert also criticizes that the film loses its narrative power in the last third because it concentrates too much on the rampant slingshot orgies, but the destruction of the city in the film is much less fun than in the interactive game mode.
Gerrit Bartels from Tagesspiegel also describes the showdown as being quite long, but emphasizes that all those who like to let it rip in front of their mobile phones and tablets get their money's worth - and who still lack one or the other of their favorites: for example Pelican to be treated like a boomerang while playing; and the three little blue birds that always hatch from an egg are suddenly there and ensure peace and pancakes.
Gross profit
In Germany, the film drew around 600,000 visitors to the cinemas in the first week after its release. The film recorded a total of around 1.4 million visitors in Germany and is therefore 12th in the annual ranking (as of August 7, 2016). Despite mixed reviews, the film grossed over $ 38 million in North American cinemas on its opening weekend, making it number 1 on the cinema charts, leaving The First Avenger: Civil War behind. The worldwide revenue of the film is currently around 350 million US dollars, making the film 14th of the world's most successful films of 2016 (as of August 7, 2016).
